Prof. Burke
While reading last week’s Economist, I suddenly see our fellow classmate mentioned: ‘The hardest evidence for a link so far comes from a team led by Marshall Burke of the University of California, which studied African wars from 1980 to 2002 and found that…’. Awesome! For the whole article see page 59 or http://www.economist.com/ node/16539538?story_id=16539538.Things are going well here in Berkeley. I finally get the chance to explore California. See to the right a picture taken this weekend, which made me realize that I’m even smaller than I thought (look closely: I’m actually in the picture).
Take care! Marieke

Back from Alaska

Returned from 30 days in Alaska's Talkeetna Mountains last night. Had a lot of rain, but we finished the route with all 13 students in good health and I didn't think about Economics once, so it was a good trip.
I'll be in Giannini the next couple of weeks. Anyone around?
Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Kyle in NY
Hey guys, whats up?
I'm now on the bus to NY. Work in DC is cool, just currently a bit crazy. Last night (Thursday) around 7.30pm, I walked into my current boss' office to ask him permission to leave Friday after lunch, given that I'd been working past midnight a couple days of the week.
Before I could start talking, he gave me a good 3-4 days of work to be completed "before the end of the week". It was Thursday night! I told him that I was actually planning to go to NY. Well, he said, "no problem, you can still take your computer with you!" Then I told him I wanted to leave early, after lunch. He couldn't say no, but he clearly wasn't very happy with that.
Well, I'll deal with that on Monday. Given that Kyle didn't honor his promise of nude-bar-crawling with us, the main purpose of my weekend trip is to hit NY's finest and tip dancers with pictures of him. Or, if I get really drunk, I may hit Chinatown, buy a leather jacket, a couple of ticonderogas, get a haircut, and hit the town Emerick-style.
If I don't get censored by Marshall's "no-manuel-posts-after-5pm" (NMPA5) spit in the First Amendment's face (and by transitivity to all the Americans and their forefathers), pics will be available soon.

Gefeliciteerd, again!
Well done oranges! Today I'll be for Spain, but in the final I'll be supporting Netherlands (I put Spain in second place in my bettings). It'll be cool to have a new champion this year and keep the ohters from a safe distance from Brazil.
Good luck, Marieke!

Suggestion
Good try Renato, with your arguments, it was almost enough.
Suggestion for the ARE 2009 crew: let’s all support the only country of origin in our year that is still playing in world cup: the Netherlands! I brought a lot of extra orange cloth in case you want to borrow ;) For those in Berkeley: come watch the next games in I-house (also if you don’t want to wear orange haha). It’s a nice atmosphere, even at 7 am.

Sorry Manuel, no shots of hot kenyan ladies... Some pretty hot farms in western Kenya though!
Go Holland!
